Maximizing Corporate Cash or Non-Profit Endowments

Investment Advisory for Institutions

We follow a process-centric approach to institutional asset management. Barrister begins by identifying your investment objectives and measuring your risk tolerance. We’ll then develop an Investment Policy Statement outlining goals, risk tolerance, timelines, and asset allocations.

The assets are then strategically positioned in a cost-effective portfolio and diversified across asset classes and geographies. We’ll proactively monitor the market, economic conditions, and allocations against target weights, adjusting as needed. This gives you the best opportunities to achieve sustainable asset appreciation.

What Is Investment Advisory for Institutions?

Investment advisory for institutions covers organizations, not individuals — corporate cash, retirement plan assets, non-profit endowments. There’s more oversight involved than with individual advisory, usually including a formal Investment Policy Statement, and often fiduciary responsibilities tied to a board or plan sponsor.

The IPS spells out the organization’s objectives, risk tolerance, timelines, and target allocations. It’s the document a board or committee points to when they need to show their fiduciary decisions were sound.

Barrister works with corporations, non-profits, and retirement plan sponsors to develop and manage portfolios aligned with each institution’s specific objectives, whether that’s preserving corporate cash, growing an endowment, or managing plan assets on behalf of employees.

Our Investment Management Process

Barrister’s institutional investment management process includes the following steps:

1. Objectives & Risk Assessment

We identify the institution’s investment objectives, risk tolerance, and time horizon, as well as whether the assets are corporate cash, an endowment, or retirement plan assets.

2. Investment Policy Statement

We develop an Investment Policy Statement that documents the institution’s goals, risk tolerance, timelines, and target asset allocations, providing your board or committee with a clear governing framework.

3. Portfolio Construction

We build a cost-effective, diversified portfolio across asset classes and geographies, aligned with the parameters set in the IPS.

4. Ongoing Monitoring

We monitor market conditions, economic factors, and portfolio allocations against target weightings on an ongoing basis, adjusting as needed to keep the portfolio aligned with the IPS.

5. Reporting

We provide regular reporting to boards, committees, or plan sponsors, documenting portfolio performance and confirming the institution’s fiduciary obligations are being met.

What's the difference between a SEP, SIMPLE, 401(k), and a pension plan?

These are all types of retirement plans, but they differ in who they're designed for and how they work: SEP (Simplified Employee Pension) — Designed for self-employed individuals and small business owners. Only the employer contributes, up to a set percentage of compensation, and the plan is simple to set up and administer. SIMPLE IRA — Designed for small businesses with 100 or fewer employees. Both employers and employees can contribute, though contribution limits are lower than a 401(k), and the employer is generally required to either match employee contributions or make a fixed contribution. 401(k) — The most common employer-sponsored plan, available to businesses of any size. Employees contribute through payroll deductions, often with an employer match, and it typically allows for higher contribution limits than a SEP or SIMPLE IRA. Pension (Defined Benefit Plan) — Guarantees employees a specific benefit at retirement, funded and managed primarily by the employer. These plans are less common today due to their cost and complexity, but they can allow for significantly higher contributions, which appeals to some business owners. The right plan depends on your business size, budget, and goals for employee retention. Barrister's fiduciaries can walk you through which option best fits your situation.
